It may have been a long time coming, but you have finally decided to buy a dog. Maybe you finally have a garden he can play in, or maybe the kids just eventually wore you down. Whatever reason, you will want your transition to life with a pet to be a smooth one. You already know that pets require a lot of patience, time, and attention, so here are a few things that will help you on your way.

“Get a puppy! It’s a clean slate” say some. While others insist “get a nice retired race dog that’s perfectly trained”. There are pro’s and con’s to whatever dog you choose. There is also a perfect dog for every family and situation so do plenty of research before you choose your next member of the family.

Get ready to teach right from the start. Normal puppy behaviours can be cute, but can fast become annoying and unmanageable. So get on the discipline right away! You can enrol your dog in a special class that will help you learn how to do it, or you can buy a book and go for it yourself. Either way you will glad you did.

Take some time to learn about nutrition and health. It’s no good buying all the best doggie gear only to feed your pet rubbish! Learn what kind of food is best for your type of dog and then do some more research. It may seem expensive, but it will save you in future health problems.

Pick the right dog food! It may be on sale, but will it result in several vet bills in the future? Different dogs require different things from their diet, and so it’s good to research what the best dog food is to feed them. You can often find deals online and buy in bulk in order to keep the cost down. It will save you in the future.
